Did you know there are mountains in Hamburg? Take a hike in the Schwarzen Bergen and you’ll feel almost as if you are in the highlands. Just 20 kilometres away from the city centre, you can wander up and down the valleys and hills through the dark coniferous forest that gives the “Black Hills” their name, frequently enjoying splendid views of the plains. The Niendorfer Gehege is also ideal for an outing. Here you can walk along 15 kilometres of footpaths with stops at the pony stables or the deer park. Violet coloured moors and green woods, yellow sand and romantic river courses – one of the best-known hiking areas in the region is the Lüneburger Heath. Given its flat nature, the picturesque landscape is ideal for families with children or for ramblers who are out of practice.
