Merkurberg

Merkur is German for Mercury.
A planet, a Roman God, a metal and also Baden-Baden’s landmark mountain!
Climbing the highest point in Baden-Baden sounds rather strenuous. It need not be, however. The summit of the 2,191 foot Merkur Mountain can be easily reached with Europe’s steepest, and most technically advanced, funicular railway. In little over 5 minutes, and after negotiating inclines of between 23% and 54%, and a difference in altitude of 1,214 feet, you will have reached your target.

It only happens to be a stone’s throw from the casino and the Kurhaus, yet it seems like an excursion to another world. Experience the region for yourself.

With a history dating back over 250 years and fashioned on the lines of French royal palaces, the Baden-Baden Casino is, and always has been, a temple to the alluring game of chance. What was in the last century a social rendezvous for nobles and the elite, nowadays opens its doors to all of Baden-Baden’s guests.

Festspielhaus Baden-Baden

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden (Baden-Baden Festival Theatre) is Germany’s largest opera house and concert hall with 2,500 seats.

Opened on April 18, 1998, the new building’s architecture incorporates the former central train station of Baden-Baden which, today, is the ticket sales hall and the Festspielhaus restaurant “Aida”. The architect was Professor Wilhelm Holzbauer (Vienna).

Planned from the outset as a privately financed cultural undertaking, the conversion to Europe’s first opera and concert enterprise to operate without public subsidy succeeded following the initial public start-up financing. Since March 2000, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden’s private cultural foundation has held the responsibility for the house’s business operations. Ticket sales, donations and sponsoring have enabled it to operate privately without public subsidies since early 2002.

Anne-Sophie Mutter

Take Anne-Sophie Mutter’s early recordings of Mozart and place them beside her newer recordings and it becomes abundantly clear just how markedly this musician has developed over time. The freshness of the Karajan recordings ensures they are always a joy to hear, but one decisive aspect has changed – Anne-Sophie Mutter’s use of colour has become bolder. It is, so to say, the “fault” of the contemporary modernity. The music of Rihm, Lutoslawski and Gubaidulina has opened doors and paved paths which can now also be walked with classical music in tow. The experience Anne-Sophie Mutter has gained flows through her playing of Mozart which, in the common sense of the word, can no longer be called “classical”. However it is most definitely stirring, new and exciting.
