Region & Events

Surrounded by the Siebengebirge hills, here you are in Germany’s oldest nature reserve: high above the Rhine valley, encircled by hill peaks with fantastic names such as Drachenfels or Ölberg. The “Rotweinwanderweg” on the Ahr river is a charming hiking route, as is the Rheinsteig which takes you up and down 320 km through hills, forests and vineyards from Bonn to Wiesbaden. Also enticing: a boat trip on the Rhine along the romantic Rhine road and lined by castles and fortresses.
Bonn itself offers visitors a multitude of interesting museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Museum of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Beethoven House. During the annual Bonn Beethoven festivals in autumn, world famous musicians perform in Bonn and the surrounding area.

Beethoven festival

Every year in the autumn, between the end of August and the beginning of October, Beethoven’s native city of Bonn celebrates the Beethovenfest, welcoming top international orchestras, well-known soloists, major ensembles and promising young performers. The Beethovenfest has welcomed renowned Beethoven interpreters and big stars like Alfred Brendel, Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel and Hélène Grimaud. The outstanding performers of the new generation have also graced its stages, including Paavo Järvi, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel Hope and Martin Grubinger. These and many other musicians return regularly to Bonn in order to present at the Beethovenfest programmes which have been specially compiled for this festival.

Beethoven festival at the Steigenberger Grandhotel Petersberg

Concert in the Rotunde, begin at 06:00 p.m.
Sol Gabetta (Cello)
Patricia Kopatchinskaja (Violin)
Henri Sigfridsson (Piano)
Ludwig van Beethoven: Trio for violin, cello and piano in E flat major op. 1/1
Peteris Vasks: »Episodi e Canto perpetuo« for Violin, Cello and Piano
Robert Schumann: Trio for violin, cello and piano No. 1 in D minor op. 63

If the classical music scene had a superstar talent search like the pop music, they would certainly have been discovered as hot shots. In the realm of Mozart, Brahms and Schönberg such labels are inappropriate, but the three young musicians giving their debut performance as a piano trio still stand out. The »Basler Zeitung« newspaper called them »exceptional talents«. The Argentinean cellist Sol Gabetta, the Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopachinskaya and the Finnish pianist Henri Sigfridsson are all amongst the elite of the young generation of musicians. They are by no means strangers to Bonn anymore. In 2010 they can be heard together for the first time.

Beethoven festival at the Steigenberger Grandhotel Petersberg

Concert in the Rotunde, begin at 06:00 p.m.
Gabriela Montero (Piano, Improvization)
Improvizations on her own themes and themes from the audience

Improvization Genius
Bach, Beethoven, Mozart … for the great composers improvization was once a very natural part of their musical work. Today their compositions are given world-class performances by world-class pianists. Perfect. Note for note. Deviating, testing and playing around are hardly done anymore. Gabriela Montero, a young, classically trained pianist from Venezuela, has found her talent for improvization. She possesses the rare ability to improvize on any themes given to her by the audience. She thereby builds a bridge to jazz and world music.

Beethoven festival at the Steigenberger Grandhotel Petersberg

Concert in the Rotunde, begin at 08:00 p.m.
Marlis Petersen (Soprano)
Anke Vondung (Alto)
Werner Güra (Baritone)
Christoph Berner (Piano)
Camillo Radicke (Piano)

Robert Schumann: »Spanisches Liederspiel« op. 74
Robert Schumann: »Minnespiel« op. 101
Robert Schumann: »Spanische Liebeslieder« op. 138

Opera without Action
The Liederspiel, the compilation of songs for one voice or many voices tied together by addressing the same poetic subject to create a mini-opera without action, was Robert Schumann’s very own invention. In 1849 Schumann composed three works of this nature. The »Spanisches Liederspiel« deals with a love story from the first shy meeting to the joyous certainty of happiness together. While op. 101 strikes a cautious note, op. 138 and op. 74 fascinate us with the local colour which Schumann ignited with the strength of his Romantic imagination, without attention to folkloristic pedantry.
