Concert Remarquable

Human – all too human …
… is the theme for these season. Great works of music do not just fall from the sky; they are rooted in the earth and are nurtured by hopes, disappointments, happiness or adversity, bold ideas or the coincidences of everyday life. For the past five years the Concerts remarquables have been making such interconnections visible and audible with the elegantly composed texts by Annette Kristina Banse and Hans Christian Schmidt-Banse and music of the highest quality. The Concerts remarquables are sponsored by Musikhaus Bössmann und Stiftung Niedersachsen.

“.. for I had to abandon the altar three times due to my affliction” – Antonio Vivaldi – a Venetian Fairy Tale
What a career! Antonio Vivaldi’s exhilarating life in an exciting city, where the arts are as naturally at home as the arterial system of the canals. The ‘red priest’ practised his ministry very negligently, but was all the more passionate in his role as composer, impresario, teacher and music manager … and not least as the lover of a certain woman

Legends of passion
Great music is a world full of grand emotions, transmitted in a secretive language. Composers are therefore seen as being special people. Especially because they have sacrificed their life to music and have often forgone the joys of “normal” life. They live out their passion in other ways and generously allow us, the listeners, to partake of it.
The two authors, Annette Kristina Banse and Christian Schmidt-Banse, tell of this passion with well-chosen words on each of the evenings, hand in hand with music played by maestros.
“Les Concerts Remarquables” are generously sponsored by the Stiftung Niedersachsen and the Musikhaus Bössmann.

“Like a breath the keys whisper and resound” – Seven variations on the Pianoforte

In concert after concert the grand piano serves to please us with musical delights, a wonderful instrument. High time therefore to make a declaration of love to the loyal pianoforte, to delve into its secrets and to examine the question of why writers and poets are so taken up with the instrument. It can have nothing to do with the complicated mechanics. What is it then? In our curiosity we rummage round in the literary evidence and discover: the piano is revered because it is surrounded by an aura of something poetical, for it can seemingly do almost everything … which will be demonstrated this evening in word and music in the most appealing way, e.g. with Franz Schubert"s Fantasie in F minor. Gesa Lücker and Gabriele Leporatti (Piano)

“… to give his poetic feelings free rein” – An obituary on Edvard Grieg

For many people his name is associated with the “Peer Gynt Suite”. However, in the great book of music history Edvard Grieg has but a small chapter. It seems as though he never really managed to leave his corner of Norway. Perhaps it is his own fault because he always maintained that he was not writing music for eternity, only for the “dwellings of men”. Our obituary examines more closely his personality and his works and concludes that he was really an amiable person and wrote some charming music … amongst others, the grandiose Sonata in A minor for Cello and Piano.

“…because, due to my ill health I had to leave the altar three times” – Antonio Vivaldi: a Venetian fairy-tale

He was a beacon of Italian musical high culture: but his stature was petite and he was sickly. And yet Antonio Vivaldi, whose chosen profession was that of a priest, had something of a rapid rise to fame … not just as a sensational violin virtuoso, not just as the composer of the “Four Seasons”, but also as an entrepreneur, opera impresario and, above all, as the instrumental teacher at the girls orphanage “Ospedale della Pietà” in Venice. If there was ever an artistically and commercially successful self-made-man, then it was he. Truly a Venetian fairy-tale which has to be told. Michal Majersky and Friends

“… and hot whispers whirr in the chaos of tumultuous indifference” – In the waiting room of poetry: “Café des Westens”

One really should be inclined to lend it ones ear: Café house music. It is more than just good entertainment; it is the unmistakeable sound of a culture which disappeared almost one hundred years ago. Let us therefore walk into the Berlin “Café des Westens”, meet the strange people there with all their weird and wonderful ideas, people with funny or tragic lives, poets and thinkers with brave visions … and the music which tells, as almost no other does, of love, passion and desire, lovely dreams and dashed hopes. A music which knows that miracles really do happen. Ensemble “Tritonus”

“A merry magician celebrating Sunday” – Fascination in Blue: George Gershwin

He lived for only 39 years. But what he made of that time could have easily filled 78 years. It is true that he did not revolutionise music history, but he put a flea in its ear: with his “Rhapsody in Blue” he found his own fresh and lively musical voice and with “Porgy and Bess” he created the first black-American opera. Like a volcano he erupted over 700 unforgettable melodies into the New World, slaved and drudged away for his lively music, before which even Maurice Ravel, Arnold Schönberg and Alban Berg bowed in acknowledgement. “I got rhythm” … that is the motto and the promise of our homage to George Gershwin. Clemens Rave (Piano)

“My angel, my everything, my self”- Of the many mortal and the one immortal love of Herr van Beethoven

After Beethoven"s death his touching love letter to the “immortal love” was found, hidden behind a cupboard. Had he sent the letter? To whom was it addressed? We do not know. All we know is that the 42 year old Beethoven tried once again to find his luck at the side of a beloved woman. For, in the above-mentioned letter, he opens his heart wider than ever before or ever again afterwards. But it was not to be, he had to forego such “delights of commonness”. For the vibrations of his soul and the voice of his heart there was only the lonely correspondence with his music, because “unfortunately I do not have a woman; I found only one, but I will never possess her”.
