Rostock is leisurely and pleasant, but also full of superlatives: The largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is also home to the largest international port on the German Baltic coast and is the seat of the oldest university in Northern Germany, founded as early as 1419.
Added to this unusual combination is the interesting architecture of the Hanseatic city. St. Mary’s Church with its astronomical clock constructed in 1472, the Kerkhofhaus with its ornamental façade of glazed bricks and the picturesque Kroepeliner Straße, Rostock’s strolling promenade with gabled houses built in various eras, are always worth a visit. Together with the harbour and the bustling life of the city’s pavement cafés and pubs, they create a harmonious whole which is Rostock’s special charm.
